Health & Safety Breaches at The Royal United Hospital in Bath

The Royal United Hospital (RUH) in Bath has been fined £300,000 for health and safety breaches after a patient died from Legionnaires’ disease.

Essentially the trust did not update their schematic diagrams for an annexe of the hospital and a result there was likely no monitoring being carried out, no sentinel points determined and this led to the break down of management and the case of Legionnaires’ disease.

BS8580 suggests that a schematic should be ‘a simple but accurate illustration of the configuration of the water system, including parts that are out of use’ and would normally be drawn as part of the risk assessment
